Supreme Court Case Could Threaten Preventive Cancer Screenings, Dr. Scott Ramsey Tells STAT
A recent STAT article highlights growing concern over Braidwood Management v. Becerra, a Supreme Court case that could upend a key provision of the Affordable Care Act: mandatory insurance coverage for preventive services like cancer screenings, without out-of-pocket costs.
Among the experts interviewed was Dr. Scott Ramsey, Curta’s Chief Medical Officer. In the piece, Dr. Ramsey warns that even small cost-sharing measures can discourage people—especially those with limited financial resources—from getting critical preventive care.
“The moment you put even a small co-pay on something, a large number of people don’t get the service,” he told STAT. He emphasized the danger of rolling back access to services like lung and colorectal cancer screenings, which are often most effective when conditions are caught early.
Dr. Ramsey’s interview reinforces the public health community’s broader concern: if the court weakens the ACA’s preventive care mandate, millions could lose access to life-saving screenings—putting early detection and equity at serious risk.
